"I was astonished!"

Harmony's Resident Witch Honored with Emmy Nod

When Juliet Mills was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Best Actress this year for her role as witch Tabitha Lenox on Passions, she became the second cast member (after the late Josh Ryan Evans) in the show’s six year history to receive an Emmy nomination.  For anyone who has followed Mills’ illustrious career which spans six decades and dozens of film and television roles, the nomination doesn’t come as a surprise.  In fact, it’s long overdue.

Understandably, Mills herself was thrilled to learn of her nomination.  Mills tells Soapdom that she first heard the news from the show’s publicist.  “My dear friend Eva, who is the publicist for Passions, called me at 6:00 am.  It was a wonderful and unexpected call.  I was absolutely astonished and delighted.”

Mills couldn’t wait to share her happiness, and immediately left home to tell her husband, actor Maxwell Caulfield.  “He’d gone for a master swimming class that he goes to three times a week,” Mills explained.  “It’s held at a local park that is within walking distance from our house.  I rushed over to the park in my trainers and waited for him to come out.  Once I saw him, I flung myself at him and told him the good news!”

Mills is quick to point out that she didn’t secure her nomination alone.  The scene she submitted to judges of the Blue Ribbon Emmy Panel was the Thanksgiving episode, where Tabitha’s home is overrun with giant turkeys while various family members argue, and secrets are revealed.  “I chose it because it was one of the best shows I’ve done, as well as one of the best written, best directed, best edited shows we’ve done.  It all came together for me, and it was just a very obvious choice.”  Mills also credits everyone in the scene with helping her performance.  “A lot of the cast was in that show, and they all react wonderfully to Tabitha.  Since it was Thanksgiving, Tabitha needed those people there at her dinner table to make things really awful for them.”

Now that Mills can relax in the knowledge that she is one of the lucky eight actresses nominated for Best Actress this year, it’s back to work.  There’s an old adage in Hollywood that it’s career suicide to act with animals and babies, because they always steal the scene.  Mills isn’t afraid to break the stereotype, and her Emmy nomination only proves that talented acting will always shine through.  As Passion fans know, Mills’ current co-star is toddler Nicole Cox (Endora).  Mills is very enthusiastic about “her baby.”  “I love working with Nicole.  I adore her.  The biggest challenge I have with her is keeping her attention, so that I usually feel I’ve got just one shot at a scene.  This means I won’t rehearse with her, but rehearse with a doll instead.  If we do a scene too many times, she gets bored.  But she’s a joy, and I’m happy to be working with her.”

Maybe Cox will be on Mills’ Emmy reel next year!
